The Republican-appointed State Board of Elections is NOT helping the party's
chances in the House of Delegates this week.
And Republican Governor George Allen is now playing hardball.
Allen's own appointees decided today NOT to certify the results of this
coming Tuesday's special elections until Friday.
That means the 100-member House of Delegates organizes Wednesday with 50
Democrats, 46 Republicans, and one independent.
If all three special House elections Tuesday went Republican, the G-O-P
could negotiate a power split.
At the Governor's direction, Attorney General Cullen's given a five P-M
Saturday deadline for the Board to re-think it's schedule.

Two Botetourt County students could face criminal charges for trying to make
a bomb --
Sheriff Reed Kelly says a sixth grade student wanted to sell a fireworks
container full of fuses, nails and shotgun pellets to another student at
William Clark Middle School.
Both have been suspended and could face criminal charges.

The flight attendants' wings from World War II and a flight timetable are
two of many reminders of an era gone by--remembered through collections
including this one-- and these hangars from the 1940's.
The hangars are a few of about a dozen buildings at Roanoke Regional Airport
scheduled for demolition.

Buildings will be renovated, revamped, demolished and constructed as part of
a 20 year plan put together by the Roanoke Regional Airport Commission.
The group is working to save some structures IT thinks have historical
value--including the old terminal control tower-- but disagrees about the

A mother of a 680 pound girl was convicted of misdemeanor child abuse- after
the 13 year old died of heart failure.
Police say the girl was found naked, on the floor- covered in bedsores, with
feces in the folds of her skin.
Police she probably could NOT have moved herself.
The girls mother faces 6-months in jail- She could've faced 6-years if she
were convicted of a felony.

The defense said the mother was overworked with a job and two sick parents.
A convicted arsonist will be allowed to testify against members of the Abed
family when the racketeering trial gets underway.
Phillip Orren actually testified today -so the judge could hear his story
before the jury does.
Orren says ROD Abed wrote him a letter last year.
In it, Abed said he'd told his lawyer how Orren has a reputation for
starting fires- -having been convicted of arson.
"They wanted you to burn down the Corner Store," the letter says, "but you
Abed's lawyer tried to convince the court that the government got Orren to
set him up.
Federal agents maintain they told Orren to just "sit, listen and watch."

Jury selection begins Monday in a case that may take six weeks to try.
Some patients and doctors are calling a new drug to treat Alzheimer's- a
Aricept (Ari-cett) is the first medication to actually slow some of the
symptoms associated with the illness.

Hospital. She says studies are being done to prove the effectiveness.

Two pilots trying to fly around the world in a balloon had to bail out just
an hour into their flight.

Michigan defensive back Charles Woodson made it official today that he would
leave school and enter the 1998 draft.
