If a parent ignores a crying baby, the experts say that may indicate a future
potential for abuse. The theory is that if parents are irritated by the crying

mutation that slows the progression of AIDS in adults also helps newborns.
The mutation is believed to be absent in African-Americans and Asians but
present in 10 percent to 15 percent of whites.

By age 8, only 11 percent of HIV-infected babies with the gene mutation had
suffered serious AIDS-related illness, compared with 49 percent of babies who
