Movie Review 1/30 If you are not already totally cynical about politicians and political campaigns, "Wag the Dog" will finish the job. When a president is accused of sexual misconduct with a fire fly girl, his Mr. Fix-it, Robert De Niro, is called in to do damage control. De NIro and a presidential aid, Anne Heche, jet to the coast to bring in the number one movie producer, a brilliant performance by Dustin Hoffman to create a diversion. They plan a "Pageant which will look like war with albania, and they want Hoffman to produce it. So he does, complete with a theme song, slogans, commercial tie in and fake war footage. They even find a "war hero" (Woody Harrelson). The strategy sessions and brainstorming by Hoffman and his cronies create the best moments in the film; which sags a bit towards the end. "Wag the Dog" gets a B+. It is funny primarily because it is so plausible; but it does present a warped view of both politics and the gullibility of the American public. cutopen
