Cruz bought a 100-acre farm in Floyd County in 1989- -to get away from
fellow Columbian drug peddlers in New York who'd threatened to kill him.
Realtor Earl Frith had listed the property and made the sale.
The two men hit it off. Before long Cruz was buying livestock from Frith.

Cruz transported hundreds of kilograms of cocaine from Columbia to New
York- -by way of a stash house at the foot of Bent Mountain.
Shannon Wilson lived in the house and testified she made up to three
thousand dollars a trip for transporting coke.
