A Roanoke man is dead after apparently taking his own life during a confrontation with police.
The Botetourt County Sheriff's Department says 20 year old Kevin Leigh Ponting was allowed into the house of an acquaintance early this morning.
Other residents weren't aware he was there and called police to report a burglary in progress.
Sheriff Reed Kelly says when an officer arrived and tried to search the suspect, Ponting produced a handgun and shot himself in the head.

She's talking about a 19-96 letter from General Electric and given to the company's hourly workers.
The letter said G-E had "the intent to transfer some production operations from Salem" to Mexico and other countries through 19-98.
A G-E spokesman told News-7 "The alternative" to sending work abroad "is to try to protect as many G-E Salem jobs as possible and risk not being competitive."
If the workers can prove they lost their jobs to Mexico, they could be eligible for extra unemployment benefits.

Those amounts could vary by a few cents depending on where you live.
The cost of converters and remotes will be shifted to a national price structure.
A converter box will cost 2-seventy a month, a remote, 18 cents. That amounts to a rate DECREASE for people using newer converters.
