Local residents say the accident was waiting to happen. The cable car lines are well known, this man says...but the planes do what they want.
This time, a U-S plane flew under the cable and cut it. The local newspaper referred to Americans planes as "playing war games with skiers. Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi called the incident "an act of tragic recklessness"..."a terrible disgrace"...and vowed that justice must be done. The initial investigation is being conducted by Italian police. Depending on how agreements covering NATO bases and U.S. training flights are interpretted...a criminal prosecution is a possibility.
A U.S. marine air safety team is on its way to conduct its own investigation at the crash site and to co-operate with the Italian authorities.
