Some V-M-I upper classman called it an initiation ritual, but others say it was a case of hazing.
Three seniors were suspended for beating six freshmen with a coat hanger and belt last fall.
Now the family of one of the victims wants the incident treated as a criminal matter.
Officials at the school are considering whether they should have contacted police and reported the cases as hazings.

While Democrats are pushing a plan to pump surplus revenue into public school construction, most legislators believe that some kind of car tax cut will pass this session.
The Senate Finance Committee has scheduled a public hearing tomorrow on Gilmore's plan and a separate bill submitted by Senator Madison Marye.
Marye has proposed cutting the sales tax on groceries.
