Seven homemade chemical bombs EXPLODED today outside a Giles County facility
for the developmentally disabled.
Police discovered the devices shortly before one this afternoon outside the
Elm Tree home in Pearisburg.
Authorities describe the bombs as extremely dangerous-- They were made of
plastic soda bottles and other chemicals.
Two other bombs did NOT explode and were removed by state police.
Authorities say charges are pending against two Giles county juveniles and
No one was hurt.
A federal jury has sentenced Aquilla Barnette to death for a crime spree
that included the murder of two people.
In June of 1996, Barnette murdered Donald Lee Allen in Charlotte, North
He then drove to Roanoke where he murdered his former girlfriend Robin
Williams with a sawed off shotgun.
Jurors deliberated eight hours before sentencing Barnette to death.

Last weeks' train derailment in Glasgow left it's mark on one neighborhood.
Town officials say the roads through the surrounding neighborhoods were
never meant to handle heavy equipment.

Norfolk Southern officials told us they plan to work with the town to
restore the roads to their original condition.
The town is currently negotiating with the railroad to improve the drainage
system along the tracks.
The federal government is in the process of terminating medicaid and
medicare payments to a Montgomery County nursing home.
Officials say deficiencies at Meadowbrook nursing home in Shawsville led to
They're concerned about the quality of care residents are receiving.
About 70 of the nursing home's nearly 90 patients rely on medicaid or
Government workers were at the nursing home last week.
They say the facility's eligibility could be saved if the latest survey
results turn out favorably-- otherwise coverage will be terminated at the end
of the week.
In the meantime-- a member of the nursing home's board of directors says the
facility is planning to bring in a management team to help solve its problems.
Officials say there are NO plans to close.
