Roanoke's highest law enforcement post, the Chief of Police.
Gaskins and local candidate, Lieutenant David Clayton, were the last two

Mayor David Bowers yesterday expressed his disappointment that Clayton was
not promoted from within.
But some city council members say City Manager Bob Herbert has done his job
in giving the people what they want.

One man is dead following a high speed police chase through two states that
ended in Danville last night.

Police in Casswell County North Carolina chased the car driven by Gary
Arthur James of Danville into Virginia after he failed to stop for a license
checkpoint.
James apparently lost control of the car on Holland Road in Danville- hit a
tree and the car flipped.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say they called off the chase before the accident happened.

and was sentenced to 42 years in jail.
But, defense lawyers later found evidence they said proved Pennington's

The Indianapolis Colts traded quarterback Jim Harbaugh to Baltimore today
for two draft choices.
Harbaugh was a four year starter for the colts and he led the team to the
1995 A-F-C championship game. The Colts received Baltimore's third and fourth
round draft picks.

Meantime, Jim Kelly will stay retired. Kelly has talked with the Ravens
for the past several weeks but today he said he's no longer interested because
he wans to spend more time with his son, who suffers from a neurological
