It's back to deliberating in federal court this morning for the jury in the
Abed case.
The jury spent two and a half hours Friday picking a foreman, and reviewing
instructions and evidence before retiring for the weekend.

Deliberations will resume this morning with the start of week seven in the
racketeering case against the Abed family.
The jury spent two and a half hours Friday... picking a foreman, perhaps
reviewing instructions and some of the evidence ...before retiring for the
weekend.
The trial is now the longest criminal case ever tried in the western
district of Virginia.

The General Assembly committees were busy working on spending bills this
weekend.
In competing budgets released last night, House and Senate budget writers
re-wrote Gilmore's priorities.
Both committees opted for:
-- more money to uninsured children,
-- pay-for-performance increases over the existing pay raises for state
workers,
-- more aid to the mentally ill,

Both also included more cash for high-tech equipment and training throughout
Virginia's education system.
The House committee included historic direct state aid for school
construction projects; Senate budget writers just included more money in the
school construction loan fund.
The House committee just said NO to Governor Gilmore's two- thousand new
elementary teachers.
The committee replaced it with a new reading teacher for every elementary
school, for the same price tag.
The proposed Roanoke Higher Education Center got NO help from either money
committee to restore cuts from Governor Gilmore.
