General District Court judge Jim Updike is now in line to succeed retiring circuit judge William Sweeney later this year.
Updike had served as Bedford County prosecutor for 15 years before ascending to the bench in 19-95.
Bedford attorney Harold Black is expected to take Updike's place on the General District court bench.
The deal was worked out between House Democratic leader Dick Cranwell and Lynchburg senator Steve Newman.
Legislators will vote on the judgeships March 5th.
