Two Botetourt sheriff's deputies are not to blame for the death of a
Buchanan man, according to his father.
But C-L Jenkins says if the 23- year- old deputy in charge had not committed
three mistakes -- his son would be alive today.

toting an illegal pistol -- when he was pulled over last Sunday.
The sheriff says Jenkins failed field sobriety tests so Deputy Earnest Spiva
told Jenkins to stay in his truck until backup arrived with a breathalyzer.
When Spiva approached the truck 20 minutes later -- Jenkins shot him twice
in the chest -- then killed himself at almost the same time a backup deputy
shot him in the head from behind.
Brent's father says his son should have been put in the police car
immediately after failing field tests, instead of being left alone in the truck

arrested her and illegally raided her home.

The investigation continues into what prompted a building in downtown
Lynchburg to give way yesterday.

Around 1:30, the brick veneer on the outside of 11- 15 Main Street suddenly
gave way and fell to the ground.
No one was injured, but seven cars parked next to the building were heavily
damaged by falling bricks and debris.

Officials say the brick shell had been applied to the building after it was
damaged by fire about twelve years ago.
Inspectors say the rest of the structure appears to be safe for the time
being.

Some Blue Ridge residents aren't happy with the way Norfolk Southern cleans
up after its self.

Norfolk Southern recently installed a drainage pipe near the railroad so
these ditches would not overflow with rainwater.
But they left their litter behind -- including railroad logs, metal cans and
spikes.
Norfolk Southern says it will clean up the mess today -- and that machines
were not available to do the job before.
But families here are already suing Norfolk Southern -- the railroad wants
to close this crossing and force residents to drive along a rough narrow dirt
road beside the tracks.
