(( From Jefferson Street in downtown Roanoke, it looks like the man behind the big glass windows is hard at work.
And most of the time he is.
[quick nat sound? -- maybe folks in conference room laughing?]
But inside the company that bears Howard Packett's name, there's something going on besides work.
[IN Q=well, yeah]
((HOWARD PACKETT/THE PACKETT GROUP: WELL, YEAH, IT'S A FUN BUSINESS, YOU KNOW .. (laughs) ))
The Westmoreland County native spent 35-years building his business into the biggest advertising agency in Western Virginia.
Last week he retired.
Now his coworkers are wondering what they'll do without the man they consider much more than a leader.
[IN Q=he is the]
((SANDY MURRAY/CREATIVE DIRECTOR: HE IS THE PRANKSTER. AND THE CLOWN. AND THE NUT.))
[OUT Q=the nut]
[(Howard walking into board room)]
((HOWARD PACKETT: HERE'S THE CREATIVE PEOPLE BACK HERE THINKING.))
[stay with video while Howard walks into room]
Make no mistake, Packett's coworkers say he is the agency's "heart and soul."
[b-roll with quick shots of commercial spots that include company's name -- Medeco at 1:58, Grand at 2:35, United Cities at 3:12]
They say he inspired some of the group's best campaigns -- on billboards, in magazines and on T-V.
But ask them what else Howard Packett has done.
[IN Q= I CAN'T]
((SANDY MURRAY: I CAN'T TELL YOU. I WOULD GET IN BIG TROUBLE.))
[OUTCUE = BIG TROUBLE]
One Halloween, Packett watched his coworkers march down Jefferson Street -- all dressed like their boss, each wearing plastic skullcaps to mock his baldness.
Packett was sitting in his office with a client.
[IN Q= so i had to]
((HOWARD PACKETT: SO I HAD TO GET EVEN AND I TOLD HIM I'VE GOT TO DO SOMETHING. SO I JUST MOONED THEM RIGHT HERE FROM THIS BUILDING ((LAUGHS)).))
[OUT Q= laughs]
But seriously, folks.
Packett did more than make his peers the butt of his jokes.
He spent most of his time trying to bring in new clients.
[IN Q= it's the biggest]
((PACKETT: IT'S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF ALL. IN THIS BUSINESS YOU'RE GOING AFTER NEW BUSINESS ALL THE TIME.))
[OUT Q= ALL THE TIME]
["Packett Spots" tape]
[IN Q= They never]
((ADVERTISEMENT: THEY NEVER IMAGINED THAT THEIR HOSPITALS WOULD BE PART OF A REGIONAL HEALTH-CARE SYSTEM.))
[OUT Q= health-care system]
[stay with Carilion video through track and next bite]
Fortunately for Packett, loyal clients made his job easier.
[IN Q= MOST ACCOUNTS]
((PACKETT: MOST ACCOUNTS WILL LAST THREE OR FOUR YEARS. WE'VE BEEN VERY LUCKY. WE'VE GOT ACCOUNTS LIKE CARILION WE'VE HAD FOR 30 YEARS.))
[OUT Q= 30 YEARS]
The former newspaper reporter left his job at the Roanoke Times when he realized there was more money in the advertising business.
But Packett said his journalism background is what gave him the skills to recognize and write the words that make a good ad.
[IN Q= I LOOK AT IT]
((PACKETT: I LOOK AT IT FOR COPY AS MUCH AS ANYTHING ELSE. BECAUSE I THINK COPY IS WHAT DRIVES THINGS.))
[OUT Q=DRIVES THINGS]
[Start here with b-roll of St. Mary's ad at 00:01:04]
One of Packett's favorite spots is this one his agency produced for Saint Mary's Hospital in Richmond.
[SOUND UP at 00:01:10 -- "Total joint replacement -- Hoo!"]
[stay with video while he's talking]
[IN Q= WHEN YOU LOOK]
((PACKETT: WHEN YOU LOOK AT THIS YOU CAN SEE HOW, IF YOU HAVE A BACK PROBLEM, IT WILL HOPEFULLY HELP YOU SOLVE THAT PROBLEM. IT'S A VERY SIMPLE WAY OF DOING IT, I THINK, IT'S ONE OF THE BEST SPOTS WE'VE DONE IN A LONG TIME.))
[OUT Q=LONG TIME]
Packett is walking away from a job he loves.
But he's not leaving the agency altogether.
He'll stay on as a consultant, still trying to reel in big clients.
[Packett talking to voters/campaigning: Tape 96-28 at 40:44]
And he has another project to keep him busy.
His term on the Salem City Council runs through the year 2000.
[IN Q= I'VE GOT TWO MORE]
((PACKETT: I'VE GOT TWO MORE YEARS. I'LL BE 68 THEN. I DON'T KNOW. DEPENDS ON WHETHER THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER YOUNG GUYS OUT THERE RUNNING AGAINST ME.))
[OUT Q= AGAINST ME]
[City council video -- Packett in chair -- Tape 96-85 at 16:54]
And if Packett does get tired of politics, well, he'll ease his way out of that, too.
He's spent a long time trying not to let work get in the way of having fun.
Now he's ready to let others do more of the work ... while he takes care of the important stuff.

[GRAPHIC=VA Tech Basketball]
A total turn-around. That's one way to describe Virginia Tech's women's basketball team.
10 and 21 last season--this year the N-C-Double-A tournament bound and Atlantic 10 Champion Lady Hokies are 21-9.
Freshman coach Bonnie Henrickson has orchestrated this winning season.

[OUT Q=HAVE TO BE THAT WAY]
((EVERYBODY. TOGETHER, BETTER. 1,2,3, TOGETHER! BETTER!))
The Lady Hokies are definitely together and as for better...Tech as done a 180 from last season's 10 and 21 record to give fans 21 wins, an Atlantic 10 Championship and an N-C-Double-A birth to cheer.
[OUT Q= ]
[IN Q=WE'VE GOT SOME]
((BONNIE HENRICKSON/VA TECH HEAD COACH: WE'VE GOT SOME NEW FACES IN THE CROWD. WE'VE GOT A COMMITTMENT FROM THE RETURNING PLAYERS TO BE EVEN MORE DEDICATED, MORE UNSELFISH, THAT REALLY FROM ONE TO 13 IS THE COMMITTMENT EACH OF THESE YOUNG WOMEN HAVE MADE.))
[OUT Q=HAVE MADE]
And one of those new faces is Bonnie, herself. She is in the first year of her first ever HEAD coaching job, but she's not new to Tech.
She spent 1988 to 95 as an assistant, before leaving to take an assistant's position at Iowa.
[IN Q=I'M VERY FORTUNATE TO]
((I'M VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE A REFERENCE POINT WITH EVERY PLAYER--HAVING BEEN INVOLVED IN THE RECRUITING OF ALL OF THEM AND I WAS VERY FORTUNATE THE CUPBOARD WASN'T BARE. THEY'RE AREN'T MANY PEOPLE IN THIS SITUATION, THEIR FIRST YEAR AS HEAD COACH.))
[OUT Q=HEAD COACH]
The Hokies are using a pressure defense and a running offense to utilize the team's depth.
At 21 and 9 it's safe to say....
[IN Q=THE NEW DEFENSE ]
((TERE WILLIAMS/VA TECH FORWARD: THE NEW DEFENSE AND OFFENSE THAT WE'RE RUNNING REALLY WORK FOR OUR TEAM AND COACH HENRICKSON PUT THAT IN.))
[OUT Q=PUT THAT IN]
But Coach Henrickson is contributing more than just new defensive and offensive schemes.
Her COMPOSURE has seeped into this team.
[IN Q=WE WOULD LOOK]
((TERE WILLIAMS: WE WOULD LOOK OVER AND SEE BONNIE CALMLY SITTING THERE AND WE'D BE LIKE 'WHAT'LL WE DO?' 'HOW DO WE MAKE A PLAY?' BUT NOW WE'RE SLOWING THAT DOWN AND CAPITALIZING ON EVERY POSSESSION.))
[OUT Q=ON EVERY POSSESSION]
And that doesn't surprise Coach Henrickson.
[IN Q=IF I WAS]
((IF I WAS SURPRISED I WOULDN'T HAVE TAKEN THE POSITION. I REALLY BELIEVED ALL ALONG THAT WE HAD THE POTENTIAL TO BE VERY GOOD. IN THE LAST THREE WEEKS THEY'RE A DIFFERENT GROUP, TO TRAVEL THE PLACES WE'VE BEEN AND REALLY FOR THEM TO BE BEHIND EACHOTHER THERE ISN'T A JEALOUS PLAY IN THIS PROGRAM. EVERYBODY'S HEADED IN THE SAME DIRECTION AND THIS TIME OF THE YEAR YOU HAVE TO BE THAT WAY.))
[OUT Q=to be that way]
The Lady Hokies find out tonight were and who they play.

We have some breaking news this morning.
No one was injured when a fire broke out just after 6:30 this morning in Catawba.
[SUPER=03-Roanoke Co./This Morning]
Roanoke County firefighters responded to the blaze at 654 Newport Road before seven this morning.
Battallion Chief Joey Stump says the cause of the fire has not been determined but it appears to have started in the upstairs bedroom.
Stump says the family was out of town.
There are no estimates of how much damage was done.
The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
It was a scene that would have made America's pioneers proud--
63-teams lined up for the ceremonial start of the Iditarod Dog Race yesterday.
This year's one-thousand mile race from Anchorage to Nome attracted one of the largest fields since 1993.
Yesterday's start, staged in part for the adoring crowds, does not count towards a musher's final time.
(------------) The race officially starts today at Eleven.
