(( From Jefferson Street in downtown Roanoke, it looks like the man behind the big glass windows is hard at work.
And most of the time he is. [quick nat sound? -- maybe folks in conference room laughing?]
But inside the company that bears Howard Packett's name, there's something going on besides work.

((HOWARD PACKETT/THE PACKETT GROUP: WELL, YEAH, IT'S A FUN BUSINESS, YOU KNOW .. (laughs) )) [RUNS:03]

The Westmoreland County native spent 35-years building his business into the biggest advertising agency in Western Virginia.
Last week he retired.
Now his coworkers are wondering what they'll do without the man they consider much more than a leader.

Make no mistake, Packett's coworkers say he is the agency's "heart and soul." [b-roll with quick shots of commercial spots that include company's name -- Medeco at 1:58, Grand at 2:35, United Cities at 3:12]
They say he inspired some of the group's best campaigns -- on billboards, in magazines and on T-V.
But ask them what else Howard Packett has done.
[SOT 14:57:28]
[IN Q= I CAN'T]

((SANDY MURRAY: I CAN'T TELL YOU. I WOULD GET IN BIG TROUBLE.)) [RUNS: 03]
[OUTCUE = BIG TROUBLE]

One Halloween, Packett watched his coworkers march down Jefferson Street -- all dressed like their boss, each wearing plastic skullcaps to mock his baldness.
Packett was sitting in his office with a client.
[SOT 14:24:21]
[IN Q= so i had to]

But seriously, folks.
Packett did more than make his peers the butt of his jokes.
He spent most of his time trying to bring in new clients.

[IN Q= MOST ACCOUNTS]

((PACKETT: MOST ACCOUNTS WILL LAST THREE OR FOUR YEARS. WE'VE BEEN VERY LUCKY. WE'VE GOT ACCOUNTS LIKE CARILION WE'VE HAD FOR 30 YEARS.))
[OUT Q= 30 YEARS]

[RUNS:05]
The former newspaper reporter left his job at the Roanoke Times when he realized there was more money in the advertising business.
But Packett said his journalism background is what gave him the skills to recognize and write the words that make a good ad.
[SOT 14:18:32]
[IN Q= I LOOK AT IT]

((PACKETT: I LOOK AT IT FOR COPY AS MUCH AS ANYTHING ELSE. BECAUSE I THINK COPY IS WHAT DRIVES THINGS.))
[OUT Q=DRIVES THINGS]

[RUNS:06] [Start here with b-roll of St. Mary's ad at 00:01:04]
One of Packett's favorite spots is this one his agency produced for Saint Mary's Hospital in Richmond. [SOUND UP at 00:01:10 -- "Total joint replacement -- Hoo!"] [stay with video while he's talking]
[SOT 14:21:49]
[IN Q= WHEN YOU LOOK]

((PACKETT: WHEN YOU LOOK AT THIS YOU CAN SEE HOW, IF YOU HAVE A BACK PROBLEM, IT WILL HOPEFULLY HELP YOU SOLVE THAT PROBLEM. IT'S A VERY SIMPLE WAY OF DOING IT, I THINK, IT'S ONE OF THE BEST SPOTS WE'VE DONE IN A LONG TIME.))
[OUT Q=LONG TIME]

[RUNS:11]
Packett is walking away from a job he loves.
But he's not leaving the agency altogether.
He'll stay on as a consultant, still trying to reel in big clients. [Packett talking to voters/campaigning: Tape 96-28 at 40:44]
And he has another project to keep him busy.
His term on the Salem City Council runs through the year 2000.
[SOT 14:22:14]
[IN Q= I'VE GOT TWO MORE]

((PACKETT: I'VE GOT TWO MORE YEARS. I'LL BE 68 THEN. I DON'T KNOW. DEPENDS ON WHETHER THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER YOUNG GUYS OUT THERE RUNNING AGAINST ME.))
[OUT Q= AGAINST ME]

[RUNS:08] [City council video -- Packett in chair -- Tape 96-85 at 16:54]
And if Packett does get tired of politics, well, he'll ease his way out of that, too.
He's spent a long time trying not to let work get in the way of having fun.
Now he's ready to let others do more of the work ... while he takes care of the important stuff.

A total turn-around. That's one way to describe Virginia Tech's women's basketball team.

Freshman coach Bonnie Henrickson has orchestrated this winning season.
