Attorneys for Louis Ceparano said they needed more time to prepare for their client's capital murder trial -- and yesterday they got it.
(----------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=03-Grayson Co.;]

But the lawyers representing Ceparano, who's charged with burning and beheading a black man, are still waiting to hear a judge's reply to another request.
Ceparano's lawyers want the court to appoint a toxicologist who would serve as an expert defense witness.
Ceparano is one of two men accused of killing Garnett "G.P." Johnson after a night of drinking last summer.
Ceparano's lawyers said he was too drunk to premeditate a murder the night Johnson was killed.
Being drunk is NOT a defense for murder.
But expert testimony might help Ceparano's lawyers get charges reduced to second degree murder.
The judge did not say when he'll decide if the expert can testify.

Two sides have finally come together in Richmond.
The House of Delegates Finance Committee has finally approved a plan for a car tax cut AND grants and bonds for school construction and repair.
Last night, the evenly split committee that has deadlocked on the tax cut question for weeks unanimously okayed the deal.
(----------------)
[VO-NAT]

It would provide money for a slower phase-in of Governor Jim Gilmore's car tax cut.
For instance, the compromise with Democrats scales car tax relief down from 15-percent of the car's value in the first year to 12 and a half percent.
But a House Republican revision to Gilmore's plan: owners of cars under one thousand dollars in value would pay NO tax at all.

[TALENT=Melanie]

The plan also calls for about 375-million dollars in bonds and direct grants to localities to help with school construction and repair.
