A three-year-old child is dead and a Salem police officer injured after a confrontation yesterday in Salem.

38-year-old Kelvin Vaughn was holed up in his girlfriend's apartment with the couple's young son when police arrived.
Kelvin Vaughn reportedly began shooting at the officers.
Debris hit Officer Marge Dillon in the forehead, arms and legs -- while another officer shot back at Vaughn.

Later police found Vaughn with two bullet holes in his stomach.
The three year old-- Kyrie Carter -- was shot at close range and died from two gunshot wounds in the chest.

Vaughn is charged with attempted capital murder. An autopsy will be performed on the young boy to determine if indeed it was shots from Vaughn's gun that killed him.

A Bedford County woman is in custody after a child she was caring for was taken to the hospital allegedly suffering from severe malnutrition.
Officials at Bedford County Memorial Hospital called the police and social services after they realized the child's condition.
Thiry-one year old Rose Heath Dooley of Timber Ridge Road is charged with one count of felony child neglect and one count of attempted murder by starvation.
She is being held without bond.
The child is reported in guarded but stable condition.

Jurors will be back behind closed doors this morning in the court martial of Sergeant Major Gene McKinney.

Yesterday, the jury deliberated for nearly seven hours, but still didn't reach a verdict.
Six military women have accused 47-year- old McKinney of sexual abuse and harassment.
He's served nearly 30 years in the Army.

Vaughn is charged with attempted capital murder. An autopsy will be performed on the young boy to determine if indeed it was shots from Vaughn's gun that killed him.

A Bedford County woman was killed when the car she was riding in collided with an ambulance.

It happened yesterday afternoon at the intersection of Old Forest Road and Lakeside Drive in Lynchburg.
A Campbell County rescue squad ambulance collided with a Plymouth Horizon driven by 25-year old Eric K. Smith.
Smith's grandmother, 84-year old Jean Korn of Forest, was a passenger in that car.
She later died at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Smith is in stable condition.
Police are still investigating.

A three-year old child is dead and a Salem police officer injured after a standoff at Oak Park Apartments off Melrose Avenue yesterday morning.
The boy's father, 38-year old Kelvin Vaughan, is charged with attempted capital murder after reportedly shooting at police.
