He was holed up in his ex-girlfriend's Salem apartment with the couple's son -- his ex-girlfriend, Kim Carter, drove off to call police, saying Vaughn would not leave.
Officers say when they knocked, Vaughn opened the apartment door and started shooting.
Officer Blake Critz then fired two shots into Vaughn's stomach and retreated.

The victim was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, but officials there aren't releasing his condition.
Detective Tolrud says the man had been shot with a semi-automatic pistol.
As police were examining the scene, another man showed up at R-M-H with a gunshot wound to the hip.
Omari Shindano Brown LIVES at 1326 Orange Avenue and says he was merely returning fire from a man who pulled up out front of the house and started shooting.

Could this be the end of the road for a compromise car tax cut that includes school construction money?
The plan gained steam earlier this week when the House of Delegates unanimously passed it... but yesterday the Senate nixed the deal.
Senate Republicans killed the plan, saying that tax relief and borrowing don't mix.
In retaliation, the House then defeated the Senate's car tax cut.

A 26 year old Bedford man has been charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a five year old girl.
Police say Mario Francisco Rivero is charged with rape and forcible sodomy against a child.
Authorities say the child's father contacted police Sunday night after he suspected his daughter had been sexually molested.
The suspect Rivero is described as a friend of the victim's family.

After more than a year of investigating, Colorado authorities are making some headway in the Jonbenet Ramsey murder case.

But the district attorney must make that decision.
The grand jury would be able to get information about the case that's eluded police so far.

With the success of the surgery, the next step to complete the procedure is a corneal transplant.

The victim was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, but officials there aren't releasing his condition.
Detective Tolrud says the man had been shot with a semi-automatic pistol.
As police were examining the scene, another man showed up at R-M-H with a gunshot wound to the hip.
Omari Shindano Brown LIVES at 1326 Orange Avenue and says he was merely returning fire from a man who pulled up out front of the house and started shooting.

It's apparent they plan to make the most of Reverend Benham's jail sentence for trespassing.

Protesters had hoped for hundreds, if not thousands of people to show up today.. but the Days Inn hotel, where Operation Rescue is getting a group rate, says only ___ rooms were booked as of last night. The "United Autoworkers Union" will now represent salaried workers at the Volvo-G-M plant in Pulaski County.

It was a somewhat close vote by employees yesterday.
The final tally was 118- in favor of union representation--
96 salaried workers were against it.
Those in favor of the U-A-W say it will provide job security as well as a better shot at raises and benefits.
This was the union's second attempt to represent the workers.
The first attempt was in 1989.
