Witnesses say a Campbell County bus driver is lucky to be alive after she crashed head-on into a tree this morning.
It happened just before 8 on Route 615 south of Rustburg.
Authorities say Virginia Stevens had just dropped off a busload of students and was going to pick up more when her bus ran off the road and into a tree.
The impact splintered the front of the bus.. leaving Stevens pinned in her seat.

((JIM WEISS/EYEWITNESS: I STOPPED, RUN OVER, SHE WAS BLEEDING REAL HEAVY FROM THE HEAD AREA UP THROUGH HERE. I PUT A COMPRESS ON IT, STARTED BENDING THE METAL BACK AWAY FROM HER, KEPT HER TALKING. HOW IN THE WORLD SHE EVER MADE IT OUT OF THAT THING ALIVE, I'LL NEVER KNOW.))

Stevens was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital suffering from what were described as "minor" injuries.
An autopsy is currently being performed on the body of a man found floating in the Roanoke River yesterday.
The Salem Rescue Squad recovered the body yesterday afternoon.
The victim's identity is not yet known... though he appeared to be a white male in his late 50's.
The invesitgation into his death is continuing.
It's been slow- going--
But authorities are taking another step to find the person who killed Jonbenet Ramsey.
Boulder's police chief wants a grand jury investigation.
That decision is up to the district attorney.
The grand jury would likely be able get information about the case that police haven't gotten so far.
Ramsey was found dead in her home in December, 1996.
It's now just an aging stretch of asphalt, but the Roanoke Drag Strip still holds some high- octane memories for many who raced there.
Today the track is overgrown. The only noise comes from the construction of homes nearby.
But in the late fifties when the drag strip opened, it was a magnet for hotrodders and car buffs throughout the region.

((RODDY MOORE/BLUE RIDGE INSTITUTE: THIS DRAG STRIP IS PART OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA'S HISTORY. IT'S NOT SOMETHING PEOPLE USUALLY THINK OF AS REGIONAL HISTORY, BUT IT IS. IT WAS A PLACE. IT WAS A TIME. IT WAS AN EVENT. AND IT IS PART OF OUR HISTORY.))
