The tornado that struck the Casacade and Callands sections of Pittsylvania County and the Axton area at the Henry/Pittsylvania County line began its path of destruction in Rockingham County, North Carolina. Two people there were killed, 30 injured. Damage is estimated in the millions.
People in this part of the Commonwealth are becoming all to familiar with crushed homes and uprooted trees from tornadoes.
Two years ago, a twister hit the Chatham and Java communities in Pittsylvania County.
Residents in Henry County will long remember the summer of 1994, when a tornado did 10 million dollars damage.
Virginia averages about six of these windstorms every year. The record year was 1993, when 28 tornadoes struck. In 1996, there were 24. There were 10 last year.
This most recent twister came just as the state gets ready to mark Tornado Preparedness Day.
But people in Pittsylvania and Henry Counties don't need a proclamation from the governor to tell them about the power of a tornado.
