Roanoke Police and E-M-S crews were searching last night for a man who reportedly jumped off the Wasena Bridge into the Roanoke River. Their search in the fast-moving river turned up empty.

Authorities say a "reasonably reliable" witness claims he spoke with an unidentified man who talked of jumping off the bridge.
Police say the witness said he was about ten feet from the man when he saw him jump over the rail and heard a splash.

Authorities are checking possible leads.
E-M-S officials say the search was called off last night because the current in the river was too strong.
The search resumed this morning.

Alcoholic Beverage Control agents discovered this stash of illegal liquor in a garage near the Franklin-Pittsylvania county line.
It all started Monday night, when agents running surveilance arrested 42-year old Stuart Adkins of Penhook for possession of illegal whiskey and discovered fifteen hundred gallons.
Armed with a search warrant, they found another three thousand gallons in a garage on Adkins' property.
The question now- where's it coming from?

They think the still is nearby, because the whiskey they confiscated last night was still warm.
Agents say this is the biggest illegal liquor bust they can remember-

Last year-- 29-year old Corey Kast was cleared of beating and raping a young woman after prosecutor Garland Spangler missed the speedy trial deadline.
Spangler tried to revive the case by indicting Kast on five new charges related to the incident.
Last month-- all but one of the charges were dismissed.
Yesterday morning-- the final robbery charge was also dropped by special prosecutor, Gino Williams, who was appointed to the case.
Williams says the robbery charge simply wasn't strong enough to prosecute.
Kast will remain in prison until he's at least 60-years old on unrelated convictions.

Despite the backing of former President Jimmy Carter's wife and a local professor, a man convicted of killing a Danville store owner in 1988 is scheduled to die tonight.
Former first lady Rosalyn Carter has asked Governor Gilmore to spare the life of Ronald Watkins.
In a letter to Gilmore, Carter said Watkins has become a devout Christian.
Watkins was sentenced to death for the fatal stabbing of 29-year-old William McCauley.

Movie Review 3/27/98
"Primary Colors" is a fascinating, often funny, sometimes insightful and consistently interesting peek inside a political campaign. It is supposed to be loosely based on Clinton's run in 1992. John Travolta as Jack Stanton has Bill Clinton's voice and manner if not his charisma. Emma Thompson as Susan Stanton is Hillary-esque, she is tough on the outside and vulnerable in private. The true stars however are the secondary characters. They are wonderful. Billy Bob Thorton is a red neck (and proud of it) campaign aide; Kathy Bates is superb as an investigator for the Stanton side. The story is told through the eyes of Stanton's new campaign manager Henry, played by Adrian Lester who observes all of the campaign shenanigans. "Primary Colors" gets an A-. The movie entertains while providing plenty to think about. [cutopen]
