One of the rail cars was carrying the flammable liquid acetone which burned for several hours and forced the evacuation of a 36 block area and an elementary school.
While the investigation continues into what caused the accident a cleanup crew that specializes in train derailments has been called in to remove debris.
Meanwhile, Lynchburg police hope to re-open the Fifth Strett bridge to traffic this morning.

A massive manhunt for a man suspected in an Alabama abortion clinic bombing is over after authorities determined it was triggered by a mistaken license plate number.

Virginia A-B-C agents have another tool to help enforce the law that prohibits tobacco sales to children.
Governor Jim Gilmore pushed for agents involvement in tobacco enforcement when he was attorney general.
Yesterday, Gilmore signed a bill that would allow A-B-C agents to look at tax records to develop their own list of tobacco retailers across the state.

Gilmore fought efforts in the General Assembly to make it even easier, by licensing tobacco dealers.[1-Sports]

Traffic continues to be tied up in some areas of downtown Lynchburg after a runaway freight train collided with another train yesterday morning.
The fire and heavy smoke sparked in yesterday's collision prompted the evacuation of residents and school students.

Israeli troops may soon be out of southern Lebanon.
The Israeli Cabinet has agreed to a United Nations resolution calling for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the security zone Sset up in 19-85 to protect Israel's northern border.

A 13-year old Northern Virginia boy faces charges that he led a middle-school sex ring.
Prosecutors say the boy confessed to being a "pimp."
The seventh grader from Reston allegedly asked girls to pay ten dollars to join a sex club where they would get dates with 13-year old boys.
Prosecutors say the teen also approached boys in his class and told them he could arrange sex with as many as three girls at once.

BUT SIDE EFFECTS OF THE TREATMENT, INCLUDING BREAST TENDERNESS AND HEARTBURN, LED TO QUESTIONS ABOUT WHETHER THE LOWER CHOLESTEROL LEVELS WERE WORTH THE TRADE-OFF IN TERMS OF OVERALL WELL-BEING. TROUBLED TEENS USING MARIJUANA CAN BECOME ADDICTED TO THE DRUG, ACCORDING TO A NEW STUDY. BUT THE RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THE TEEN-AGERS GET INTO TROUBLE -FIRST- AND THEN BECOME DEPENDENT ON THE DRUG. THE RESEARCH SHOWED THAT MORE THAN 80-PERCENT OF THE BOYS AND 60-PERCENT OF THE GIRLS WERE -CLINICALLY- DEPENDENT ON CANNABIS. THE AUTHORS OF THE STUDY FROM THE UNIVERISTY OF COLORADO'S ADDICTION RESEARCH AND TREATMENT SERVICE WILL NOW RESEARCH IF THERE MAY BE A GENETIC LINK TO THE MARIJUANA ABUSE.

Franklin County is making sure to include the Franklin Heights neighborhood in a land deal with Rocky Mount.

The county needs sewer lines along Route 40 East.
Rocky Mount will build and pay for them, for a price -- the town wants to annex the surrounding land.
That way, if the new sewer lines attracted businesses the town would share the profit.

In a letter yesterday -- Franklin County officials say they will accept the town's terms, but ONLY if the Route 2-20 business area and the Franklin Heights neighborhood north of town also get new sewer lines.
