Late yesterday, Halmode Apparel Company in New York announced it is discontinuing operations at its New Castle plant.

The company said it could not come to terms with a supplier that gave the New Castle plant most of its work.
Halmode operates two other plants in Virginia.
But the company said neither its Covington nor its Roanoke operation is in danger of going out of business.

The fire spread and burned more than 400 acres on the Mounain's western slope.
Authorities say the fire was fed by dead limbs from witner ice storms and fanned by high winds.
At one point evacuations were ordered when the fire threatened 25 homes.

All-night poker games at their home have resulted in indictments against a Roanoke man and his son.
Police said the games netted Larry and Timothy Harless two-thousand dollars or more a day.
The pair face felony charges of conducting an illegal gambling operation.
They could get up to ten years in prison and 20-thousand dollar fines if convicted.
During the investigation, detectives recorded license plate numbers of visitors, sifted through the trash and then raided the home.
