Movie Review 4/17
Lost in Space could have been a better movie. It has many elements of a good old fashion science fiction movie, of course with lots of new fangled technology, and the Robinson family is amazingly free of overt sentimentality. But the movie tries to be both a kid movie and an action film. The mix doesn't work and it is not for young children.
William Hurt is Dr. Robinson, so involved in his work that he doesn't have time for his family, particularly his young son Will, played by Jack Johnson, who is a gifted scientist in his own right. Younger daughter Penny, Lacy Chabet, is a typical teen and the oldest, Judy, Heather Graham is a scientist like her dad. Mimi Rogers doesn't have much to do in the role of Mom Robinson. Matt LeBlanc is the pilot for what is supposed to be a routine trip through space to check out a climate friendly planet for colonization; but evil Dr. Smith, Gary Oldman, sabotages the ship and sends the family, and accidentally himself, careening through uncharted space.
Lost in Space gets a C+. It needs to loose the cartoony alien, give Penny more of an edge and try to decide if it is camp or serious sci-fi. This is obviously part one of a series, and the ending is ambiguous as a result.

The storms that devistated Alabama and Georgia Wednesday night brought their fury to the Mid-Atlantic coast.
In Virginia Beach yesterday, the storm system produced several funnel Cloud sightings.
There were no serious injuries but the storm collapsed part of building and dumped egg-sized hail in some areas.
Meantime, high winds in North Carolina lead to the death of a Virginia man.
Police say the man died when a tree limb fell on top of his car as he drove along Highway 33.
