A Botetourt County man involved in a shootout with sheriff's deputies last month was drunk. 28-year old Leonard Brent Jenkins killed himself

after shooting at two officers. The medical examiner confirms Jenkins was driving drunk on the morning of March first.

Deputy Earnest Spiva pulled him over -- the sheriff says Jenkins shot the deputy twice in the chest then fatally shot himself.
Backup deputy Greg Hepler also shot Jenkins once in the back of the head.
Jenkins died almost immediately -- Spiva was not seriously injured and both deputies are back at work.
State police are investigating the shootout.

The first rabies case of the season has hit Roanoke County.
Health Officials have confirmed that a bobcat that attacked a man and some pets in the Back Creek area was rabid.
William Martin was mauled by the infected animal in his yard over the weekend.
Officers shot and killed the animal.

According to police, 25-year-old Glen Anderson, Jr was shot in his home on 407 Patton Avenue Northwest.
Police say a masked gunman shot Anderson twice in the stomach when he got out of bed after hearing the intruder.

Henry County authorities are investigating a weekend homicide.
Authorities discovered the body of 63 year old Bessie Marie Amos at her home Sunday after receiving a report from worried family members.
Autopsy results yesterday revealed she died of multiple head injuries.
Authorities aren't sure when she died, she was last seen alive Friday afternoon.
There is no word yet on a suspect.
Authorities are asking that anyone with information about the crime contact the Henry County Sheriff's department.

Many of those weapons were six years old.
Officers say the new bullets are faster and can knock a person down more effectively.
