Fire investigators say evidence indicates 63-year old Sadie B-Jones was smoking in her second floor apartment.
Her cigarette apparently flared, catching her clothing on fire shortly after 7 p-m.
Fire damages were contained to Jones' apartment, although the rest of the retirement community was temporarily hampered by smoke damage.
All of the other 100 or so residents were evacuated from the building until the smoke was cleared.
Fire fighters ruled the cause of the blaze an accident.
Counseling is being made available to help residents of the home and firefighters deal with the fatality.

The blaze broke out around three o'clock in a duplex on Berkley Avenue in the Virginia Heights neighborhood.
It spread through the upper level of the house and got into the walls and eaves, making it hard for firefighters to get it under control.
It took more than an hour to put it out.
Two people were inside when the fire started--the owner and his upstairs tenant.
The tenant says he was asleep when he woke up, smelled smoke and got out of the house.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

9-1-1 calls are supposed to alert emergency crews of a crisis. But limited resources are preventing the Montgomery County Sheriff's department from being truly efficient.
(----------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=03-Christiansburg;]

That's one reason-- sheriff's officials are frustrated with the large number of 9-1-1 hangups.
The department has logged nearly one thousand, since August and most are NOT actual emergencies.
The majority are children playing on the phone or adults who've dialed the wrong number and simply hang up.
Whatever the case-- the dispatcher is required to call the person back to confirm everything is OK.
If the caller doesn't answer or the line is busy-- a sheriff's deputy is immediately dispatched.
