The body of a man who drowned in the Dan River last week was pulled from the river yesterday.

Police began searching the river Wednesday for 45-year-old Lynwood Henry Parrish.
Back then, a witness claimed he saw Parrish slip from a ledge while scooping up fish in a net.
Danville police have confirmed that the body recovered from the Dan river yesterday is that of Parrish.

Police say random gunfire was the cause of a Martinsville woman's death Saturday.
According to police, 23 year old Denisha Wilson was arguing with her boyfriend outside his home on Royal Drive.
They say Wilson pulled a gun out of her car and started shooting randomly.
29-year-old Dionysia Oaks was hit in the chest.
She died a short time later.
Wilson is charged with second degree murder.
She's being held in the Martinsville jail without bond.

Attorneys for six Virginia Military Institute cadets convicted of lying will ask for federal intervention in the case today.
A jury of seven V-M-I cadets returned the verdict Friday night in an honor court case.
On trial were three freshmen and three seniors.
The freshmen were accused of lying to protect their senior mentors who spanked them with belts.
The seniors were accused of lying about hitting the freshmen for barracks rule violations.

Roanoke County hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday as local officials celebrated the near- completion of the first phase of a new residential development.
The development marks a first time private-public partnership between the community and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Fire officials are investigating a fire that destroyed a home in Bedford County.

In Roanoke, two children were injured yesterday when their mother apparently fell asleep while driving her car.

Auhorities say after falling asleep at the wheel the mother plowed her car into a pole.
It happened on Brandon Avenue at about 3:30 in the afternoon.
All three were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

A car accident in Pulaski took the life of one person dead.
State Police say 58- year- old Claude Edward Thompson was a passenger in a car that was struck head-on by a another car on Route 7-47 last night.
Thompson was killed in the accident. No word on injuries to others involved in the accident.
The driver of the other car, whose name was not available from police, has been charged with reckless driving.

A horse trailer jackknifed when the Jeep pulling it slowed down.
The horse was injured.

Virginia Tech's Veterinary School sent a team of doctors to the scene.
They stabilized the animal before taking it back to the school.
Upon examination, the horse was found to have severe fractures in two vertebrae midway up its neck.
