Vistar Eye Center plans to open the center by the end of this year, but first had to receive the go ahead from the state board. That savings could be as high as four-hundred percent in some cases. Carilion, the area's largest hospital system, opposes the proposal, saying the loss of patients at area hospitals would cost millions of dollars each year. Yesterday the 150-year old Piedmont Mills building was auctioned off yesterday for a final bid of 37-thousand 500 dollars.
Developer Steven Conner of Appomattox is the buyer.
Conner says he wants to tear down the historic building, but salvage the valuable timber beams inside.
Conner would then clear the lot and re-sell the property.
But city officials might deny Conner a demolition building to save the riverfront building.
