Three people escaped serious injury in Pittsylvania County last night when a tornado struck a house north of Danville.
And the severe weather brought a mudslide that blocked one lane of U-S 29 on White Oak Mountain.
A tornado also touched down in Caswell County, North Carolina-- just south of Danville.

Ominous lightning lit up the sky.
A tornado is believed to have hit this house off of Route 41 in Mount Hermon.
The roof is missing.. the contents of the top floor are strewn all over the yard.
Luckily, the people who live here are reported to be okay.
Other homes on this street sustained moderate damage.
Emergency crews stationed themselves throughout the southern end of Pittsylvania County.
Many of them warning motorists of flooded roads.
Earlier in the evening, a tornado touchdown was reported in Caswell County, North Carolina-- about 15 miles south of Danville.
This mobile home was completely blown over.
The people inside walked away with relatively minor injuries.
Ray Coleman says the tornado came without a warning.

A trial date in the case of a former Smyth County teacher accused of having sex with one of his students.

A July court date was set yesterday for 34-year old Michael Dwayne Blevins.
He's charged with 30-counts of consensual oral sodomy and 15-counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Prosecutors say the teenage girl was a former student of Blevins when he taught in Rural Retreat although the alleged crimes happened in Smyth County.

A rare unanimous vote by the Senate to revamp the Internal Revenue Service.

Last night the Senate approved legislation that strengthens taxpayers' rights.
It also includes the creation of a special panel to watch over the I-R-S.
Because the House passed a different tax-agency bill last year, the next step is for congressional negotiators to work out differences between the House and Senate versions.
Supporters hope to wrap it all up by Memorial Day.

And the plant manager here says most other sewing contracts are going to foreign countries, where labor is less expensive.

(("The Big Hit" is violent, silly and shouldn't be taken seriously for a second. The movie makers throw so much stuff on the screen they are bound to hit some of the time...and some of the time they miss. But the movie gets boring.
Mark Wahlberg is Melvin Smiley, a sweet faced hit man who wants people to like him. Because of that, he has a girlfriend and a fianc_ (Christina Applegate) who are bleeding him dry. He needs money so he signs on with his hit man cohorts for a moonlighting job of kidnapping. He should know better. These guys, particularly Cisco-an over the top performance from Lou Diamond Phillips, is no friend and will no doubt con him out of any money he gets.
The victim, played by China Chow is a smart mouth, her father is bankrupt, and her Godfather is Cisco and Melvins tough guy boss. What's a fellow to do?
There are some innovative action scenes and some comic scenes work, but the two make a weird mix most of the time. "The Big Hit" gets a C. It's not all bad, but certainly not a hit.)) [Steve Live]

Six tornadoes were reported in parts of South Carolina last night, killing at least one person.
Emergency officials say one woman died when she was crushed under her mobile home.

Tornadoes also touched down in NORTH Carolina.
Tractor trailer rigs and mobile homes were tossed around like toys. High winds knocked down trees and powerlines, tore the roofs off houses, and flattened a barn.
And a cow inside the barn had to be pulled free of mud and debris.
So far no deaths or injuries have been in the state.

Fog is partly to blame for yet another wreck that blocked traffic on Interstate 64 over Afton Mountain.
Three tractor-trailers and 18 cars were involved in yesterday's pileup.
The road was blocked for about 90 minutes.
No serious injuries were reported.
State police said the highway's fog lights were on at the time and visibility was about 100 feet -- but police said a tractor-trailer was driving too fast and clipped several vehicles.

A surprise inspection caught some Cave Spring High School students off guard yesterday.

Roanoke County police officers made a surprise visual sweep of cars in the Cave Spring parking lot yesterday morning.
A county lieutenant says officers found marijuana in three vehicles.
They also found what may be a crack pipe, and several cars which contained tobacco products, which are also prohibited on school grounds.
Several students may be charged later as a result of yesterday's search.

Defense Secretary William Cohen has ordered the remains of a vietnam veteran be exhumed from the Tomb of the Unknowns to see whether he can be identified.

The body is believed to be that of Airforce pilot Michael Blassie.
The methods for identifying remains have improved considerably since the vietnam war.
A Pentagon spokesman says if the remains can be identified now, then the military has an obligation to try to do so, for the families.
The reamins will be removed on Thursday.
D-N-A experts say it will take anywhere from a month to 12 weeks to get the results.

After listening to a string of taxpayer horror stories last month, the Senate has vote to overhaul the Internal Revenue Service.

Last night, in a rare unanious vote, the Senate approved legislation to restructure the I-R-S.
The bill would strengthen the rights of taxpayers and create a a special panel to watch over the tax agency.
Because the House passed a different I-R-S bill last year, the next step is for congressional negotiators to work out differences between the House and Senate versions.
Supporters hope to wrap it all up by Memorial Day.

Police say 20-year old Antuan Taylor stole a money bag from a depositor at First Virginia Bank on Orange Avenue.

Jones was there in his unmarked auto, getting ready to cash a check for lunch money.

The twister ripped the roof off of one home and damaged others.
