Behind the heavily guarded gates, the Sinatra family was in mourning.

A Thaxton man is in critical condition after being airlifted to Roanoke Memorial tonight.

Police say Maurice Brammer and his neighbor Gerald Profitt were arguing, when weapons were drawn.
The two apparently fought over a gun, which went off, hitting 66-year old Brammer three times.
Police say they know of no history of disagreements between the two men.

Ceparano's attorneys contend prosecutor Bolt favors Cressell.
Bolt represented Cressell while in private practice.

Lennord Davidson sued the city and two of its officers, claiming he was the victim of police brutality.
He wound up in the hospital and had to have a metal pin put in his leg.
The 45-year old Jamaican citizen was arrested in 1994.
His girlfriend had called police to her apartment in Northwest Roanoke, following an argument with Davidson.

Over the past 5 and a half years, A-E-P stockholders have paid roughly 320- thousand dollars to CEER-- which stands for the Coalition for Energy and Economic Revitalization.
The group's goal: to supply its members with information not only about the powerline project, but also about upcoming hearings and to encourage them to write letters on behalf of the power company.
The New River Valley Economic Development Alliance used to belong to CEER but changed its position under a new director.

A company spokesman says the goal of the ads is to provide information to the public.
But the same spokesman declined to say how much was spent during a recent 16- week advertising campaign that got underway in late January.

The city's 43-million dollar flood reduction project has been held up by the discovery of hazardous materials.
This week, the city found out its cleanup plan got the go-ahead from state and federal agencies.
Mayor David Bowers says now that all the paperwork's been approved, the city can start working on widening the river channel, the biggest part of the project.

The Winston all-star weekend in Charlotte began last night with qualifying for the Winston and a couple of qualifying races for the Winston Open.

The important thing about the qualifying is that it's the first opportunity for the drivers to showcase their special new paint schemes.
We told you at six, Mark Martin would have a new one, and here it is.

The folks associated with the all-star weekend are always tinkering with the format, and the cars lining up in tonight's Winston Open had to earn their way in through two 25 lap qualifying races.
Jeremy Mayfield dominated the first race and he will start on the inside pole.
Jimmy Spencer won the second 25 lap dash to earn the outside pole position.
Rick Mast blew up only four laps into the second race and he will start last tomorrow night in the Open.
Ken Schrader will also be in the back after his pit crew messed up a tire change and ripped up the back quarterpanel of the car.

And finally two new champs were crowned at The Three Rivers district Track meet held yesterday at Glenvar.

125 athletes from the six district schools competed in competing in 15 events throughout the day.
Giles is the defending girls champion was dethroned as Floyd County won the girls competition with Radford second, Giles third and Glenvar fourth, Shawsville fifth and Auburn sixth.
In the boy's arena, Radford won the team title with Floyd second, Giles third, Shawsville fourth, Glenvar fifth and Auburn sixth.
This is the fourth year for the Three Rivers competition as a district.
