A relief for Roanoke County officials is a disappointment to residents who oppose construction of a new high school in their neighborhood.
Last night, county officials announced they've reached agreement with landowner Charles Palmer to purchase the Woods End property for two- point- five- million dollars.
The deal would end the controversy over the county's threat to condemn the land, but it doesn't satisfy neighbors who oppose construction of a high school on the 70- acre site.

A Federal judge hands out the first sentences from a Roanoke cocaine distribution ring. We'll have those up next,
and then a little later in the newscast, we'll see how a furniture company is trying to baby it's customers.
On Health Check, we'll see how actor Christopher Reeve is inspiring a young woman from Lynchburg.
We'll have that and this week's Growin It.
Half a dozen drug couriers -part of the cocaine distribution network operated by Javier Cruz- were sentenced in federal court today.
Several of them- -including Cruz's ex-wife, Pamela- -mentioned threats of violence Cruz made in the course of their association with the Columbian drug dealer.
Gene Kinsey got a little over two years to serve for driving a camper to Phoenix for Cruz.
HE says Cruz put a gun to his head and ordered him to drive the camper back to Roanoke... once it had been loaded with cocaine.
The prosecutor believes the new claims of Cruz's violent behavior may been been exaggerated.
[IN Q=That's not to]
((THAT'S NOT TO SAY MR. CRUZ DID NOT HAVE A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. THAT WAS SIGNIFIED IN SOME CASES, YES. ))

Four women were placed on probation; two male defendants got time to serve.

Roanoke's mayor says all the paperwork's done.
Now, the city can finish the rest of its long-awaited flood reduction project.
Mayor David Bowers says the city got word this week from state and federal authorities that the last part of the 43 million dollar project is in place.
[IN Q=This means that]
((DAVID BOWERS/ROANOKE MAYOR: THIS MEANS THAT WE WILL MEET THE FLOOD REDUCTION PLAN DEVELOPED OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS. THIS MEANS IT'S BEEN APPROVED BY THE DEQ, THE EPA AND CORPS OF ENGINEERS AND THE CITIZENS OF ROANOKE GOING BACK TO 1989.))
[OUT Q=back to 1989.]
That's when voters approved a bond issue to cover part of the cost.
The plan includes widening the Roanoke River channel, building new low-water bridges in a couple of places, and other measures that will reduce damage from severe flooding.

Mike Mussina is your pitcher, Sandy Alomar is your batter. This is not what's supposed to happen.
Alomar hits a line drive straight up the box and right off Mussina's face.
The wicked shot broke his nose and also put a cut above his right eye.
Mussina amazingly walked off the field, but the incident will likely place him on the disabled list for the second time this season.
The O's also lost the game 5-to-4.
Now as for the rumored trade between the Dodgers and the Marlins. LA is apparently ready to ship all-star catcher Mike Piazza and Tod Zeile to Miami in exchange for Gary Sheffield, Charles Johnson, Bobby Bonilla and Jim Eisenreich.
If the deal goes through the Marlins will have just two players left from last season's championship squad.
The Salem Avalanche returns home tonight to begin a three game series with Kinston.
And coming up at six, high school softball and track highlights, plus Roy Stanley introduces us to Rod Carew's daughter who is playing softball in Salem this week.
