A swim in Smith Mountain Lake last year left three children ill after they came in contact with the E-Coli bacteria.

And, according to the health department there were other cases.
But, many people still disagree over who's to blame, and wonder if officials are taking the right steps to prevent it from happening again. [TAKE PINNACLE BOARD 1046]

When it comes to feeding starving people around the world, the first groups that might come to mind are the Red Cross or UNICEF.
But Bedford County is home to three organizations that are making a big difference here in Virginia, across the country and around the world.
Steve Smallshaw explains in this week's "Virginia Profile".

(( The Reverend Ray Buchanan is a Methodist minister and a former Marine.. but if you ask, he'll tell you he considers himself more of a "religious entrepreneur" in the business of fighting world hunger.
Inside this modest two- room office in downtown Bedford, Buchanan heads up "Stop Hunger Now"... a new organization that helps distribute money, food and supplies to starving people around the world.

[IN Q=The fun part]

((REV. RAY BUCHANAN/STOP HUNGER NOW: THE FUN PART OF THIS IS THERE'S SOMETHING GOING ON ALL THE TIME. IT'S A MATTER OF WHAT PIECE OF PAPER YOU'RE GOING TO PICK UP AS TO IS IT WEST AFRICA, IS IT NORTH KOREA, IS IT LATIN AMERICA? AND THE THING IS YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.)) [RUNS:14]
[OUT Q=make a difference.]

They do it by catching the people who fall through the cracks.
Well- publicized droughts and famines will attract the bigger relief organizations.. but Stop Hunger Now handles crises of a smaller scale.
Backed by money from a Virginia Beach philanthropist, every dollar in donation is spent ONLY on food and medicine to ship overseas.
Each flag on this map marks a spot where Stop Hunger Now has stepped in and started saving lives almost immediately.

(/////SOT/////)
[SOT 11:17:26]
[IN Q=So that's our]

((BUCHANAN: SO THAT'S OUR NICHE.. WE GO IN AND ASSESS THE SITUATION AND WORK WHERE THE NEED IS THE GREATEST WITH THE GROUPS WHO ARE ALREADY IN PLACE, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THEY'RE RELIGIOUS OR NON- RELIGIOUS OR WHATEVER.. WHOEVER'S DOING THE JOB TO GET FOOD TO HUNGRY PEOPLE, WE'RE GOING TO HELP THEM.)) [RUNS:15]
[OUT Q=to help them.]

Before he went international, Buchanan started out on a much smaller scale when he founded the Society of Saint Andrew in Big Island.
Starting from inside this old sheep shed in 1979, the Society has salvaged more than 220 million pounds of unwanted food and put it in the hands of the needy.

((JAY BARTON/SOCIETY OF ST. ANDREW: EVERYTHING THAT WE TOUCH WOULD EITHER BE PLOWED UNDER OR LEFT TO ROT, SO WE'RE MAKING SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING.)) [RUNS:09]

Another Society spinoff is the Hunters For The Hungry program, which distributed more than a hundred thousand pounds of donated venison to Virginia food banks last year.
Between the three organizations, they're helping hungry people on every level.

((JAY BARTON/SOCIETY OF ST. ANDREW: YOU CAN KIND OF FIGURE OUT WHERE YOU WANT TO BE IN THIS, IF YOU WANT TO BE A STATE PROGRAM OR AN INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM OR A NATIONAL PROGRAM.
