Keith, the uterine balloon procedure for women who suffer from excessive menstrual bleeding is brand new. It's called Thermachoice and it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in December, now a Radford gynecologist is bringing it to the area.

Uterine balloon therapy is like endometrial ablation which has been around a while, in that it removes uterine lining, but the new procedure is faster and less invasive.

The fluid is heated to 188 degrees for eight minutes.
It sloughs off the uterine lining. The procedure allows the patient to go home that day.
