[7Movie-review] 5/30 "The Horse Whisperer"
One of the best things that can be said about "The Horse Whisperer" is that it provides a drastic contrast to mega-movies like "Godzilla" and "Armageddon". In this quiet little film, a horse has been badly injured in an accident. Its young rider, Grace,(played by Scarlett Johnson) is maimed physically and damaged emotionally. Her mother, a hard driving editor (Kristen Scott Thomas) decides she must save Grace's horse and searches out Tom Booker, (Robert Redford) a man with a gift for helping difficult horses. Scott Thomas is fully believable as the tough, decisive editor, but in the Montana wide open spaces where she is supposed to bloom, she isn't convincing. The supposed romance between Annie and Booker seems contrived and empty; although scenes between Redford and young Grace have a genuine feel. So much time is given to lovingly photographing the Montana scenery, not much time in this over-long movie is spent getting to know the characters well enough to really care about them. (Chris Cooper and Dianne Wiest have very little to do) "The Horse Whisperer" gets a B-. Those desperate for a romantic movie may find it in this pallid offering; but those looking for passion, other than for horses, will have to look elsewhere.
