At Kinkel's home, the mystery only deepened, and so did the
danger. Police say the boy who liked collecting guns and amo, liked making
explosives as well. Bomb squad crews spent their second day in a row disarming home-made devices hidden all over the house.
One of them so big crews had only one way to get it out.
A team of counselors replaced much of the teaching faculty in
springfield today. a place of learning that had become a place of killing, was
now attempting to become a place of healing.

A Lynchburg teenager has been sent to death row for the rape, robbery and murder of a woman in Appomattox County last year.
A jury spent ninety minutes deciding that 19-year old Brandon Wayne Hedrick should die for his crime.
Hedrick and another man abducted Lisa Yvonne Crider, drove to Appomattox County then shot her and left her for dead.
After getting the death penalty, Hedrick said he'd rather die than spend the rest of his life in prison.

Hedrick will be sentenced in July.
His alleged accomplice, Trevor Jones, is scheduled for trial next month.
A former Radford University student faces ten to 15 years in prison for setting a fatal fire at Radford's Delta (Taw-Kie) Tau Chi fraternity house.
Today 21-year Micheal Harvey pleaded guilty of arson and second degree murder.
The fire claimed the life of 21-year old Christopher Mirch in 1996.
Prosecutors reduced the charge to second degree murder as part of a plea agreement.

A Henry County man was sentenced to life in prison plus 18 years for shooting his estranged wife and murdering her friend.
Danny Steve Hall says he could not stand seeing his estranged wife with another man, so he shot Dewayne Lawson repeatedly with an assault rifle, even as the man lay on his back begging for his life.
Then he shot his wife Sandra once, crippling her.
Hall says Lawson shot first but police never found a second gun.

Two years ago, Patrick Muldoon carried the day at the ninth district convention and he carried the GOP banner in the fall campaign.
Though he eventually lost to Rick Boucher by a substantial margin, he's back to give it another try.

An engineer, now close to completing a law degree, Muldoon grew up in Giles County. He is a lifelong republican who cut his teeth on the campaigns of William Wampler and Jeff Stafford.
Barta was born in Richlands, and after a stint in the U.S. Army, he settled in Radford to raise his family and build his practice.

Actor and director John Derek has
It was two days ago Derek was found unconscious in his California home and underwent heart surgery.
He held roles in All the Kings Men and The Ten Commandments.
But Derek's acting career stalled and he turned to still photography and directing.
He was married to Linda Evans- and later Bo Derek.
John Derek was 71.

This is the first one in Virginia.
It's called "Back to Life from Heaps of Rubble." The new church-based program was dedicated at the Bedford County Jail today.
It helps inmates adjust to life after prison. They enter the program six months before being released from jail.

For 25 hours a week, they receive training in Bible study, money management and discipline.
A mentor and church then help the inmate after he is released into society again.

Paving a road could splinter a community.
Some church goers don't want to say goodbye to a favorite old tree.
Some members of the Broad Creek Presbyterian Church in Rockbridge County are concerned about V-DOT's plans to pave a road in front of the church.
They say it'll take away most of their parking spaces and more importantly Dogwood--an old tree that's stood its ground for many years now.

A big weekend of soccer and cycling will begin tomorrow in the Roanoke Valley.
But first a big trade in Major league baseball involving catcher Mike Piazza.
For the second time in a week, Piazza has ben traded. This time the Florida Marlins are sending the all star catcher to the New York Mets.
A week ago Piazza was traded from the Dodgers in a 7 player deal after the Dodgers refused his demand for a seven year contract. The 29 year old is eligible for free agency at the end of this season.

The Blacksburg Indians have won another region three soccer championship.
Tonight in Daleville, The Indians beat district rival William Byrd 3 to nothing.

The Indians are on the attack working the corner kick to perfection as Adam Breske gets up high and heads it in for the score to make it 1 to nothing Blacksburg.

Then with only seconds remaining in the half the
ball is sent in again Breske gets a head to it but its cleared away from the goal and the Indians win it 3 to nothing.
And the Lady Terriers of William Byrd are the Region three softball champions. Byrd beat Rustburg tonight 1 to nothing.
A big Soccer weekend in the Star City. Over three thousand Athletes playing on 180 teams will open play in the Berglund Festival Soccer Tournament.
And the Roanoke Wrath plays Wilmington Saturday night in the team's first home game since May second.
The 3 and 5 Wrath will take advantage of a huge soccer weekend by playing it's first game of the season at Victory Stadium.

The Saturn Cup bycicle races invade the streets of Roanoke this holiday weekend with the CMB Mortgage Road race, the Roanoke Orthopaedic Center Hill Climb and the Saturn Festival Cup.
In addition to the road race local cycle clubs like the BRBC have been training for the Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic Race Series that has been added. Armstrong, who has courageously recovered from cancer, was always a fan favorite among kids during his Tour DuPont days and his new race is doing well where it has run.
