Nearly 50 rescue workers are searching a 15-square mile area in Franklin County at this hour for an elderly man missing since early this morning.

Authorities say George W. Walker wandered away from the Franklin Manor Rest Home between six and eight this morning and hasn't been seen since.
Henry, Pittsylvania, and Roanoke County E-M-S workers are helping with the search.
Police say Walker is a 68 year-old black man and was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt, and brown pants and tennis shoes.
He's about five foot-seven and 139 pounds.
Police are asking people with information to contact the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.

Meanwhile, Franklin County police have identified the victim in last night's shooting as 19-year old Mickey Ellis.
Authorities say Ellis was shot in the face during an argument at a McDonald's parking lot in Rocky Mount.
Police arrested Randy Moran (MOR-ANN) in connection with the shooting.
Ellis was transferred to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
His condition is NOT known.

A woman smashed her car into the back of a tractor-trailor this morning--tying up traffic on I-81.

The accident happened about 7:15 near exit 143.
State Police say the woman was driving in the left lane, fell asleep, ran onto the median, then under the back of a truck.
She was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, though her injuries did NOT appear to be serious.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was NOT hurt.
Southbound traffic was stopped for a short time while the car was hauled away.

33 people were hurt when a church in Illinois exploded this morning.

The blast hit the First Assembly of God Church in Danville, Illinois.
About 300 people were attending a worship service when it happened.
The pastor says the explosion was centered near the youth section of the building, and many of those injured are teenagers.
Federal agents spent the day collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.
So far they don't know if the blast came from inside, or outside the building.
Investigators say they're not ruling ANYTHING out.

(( The fire at the Candlelight Club was discovered around one in the morning.
The club sat on Route-Eleven, just outside the Roanoke City limits.
Roanoke County firefighters at first couldn't find the fire and as smoke continued to build, the situation worsened.
There was little the firefighters could do.
Flames gutted the popular club and caused some 60-thousand dollars in damage.
Afterwards the owners criticized the efforts of firefighters-- saying they should have brought more water and called the Roanoke City Fire Department for help.
Roanoke County firefighters defended their actions, contending that heavy smoke and intense heat limited their efforts and left little chance of saving the building.

Cyclists from all over the country were put to the test in the Roanoke Orthopaedic Center Hillclimb on Mill Mountain.
