Thousands of Americans, like Karl Vandegriff, are victims of phone slamming.
It happens when someone changes your long-distance carrier without your permission.
In Vandegriff's case, a telemarketer got the name of someone who works at his business and said that person OK'd the switch to a new phone company.

Bell Atlantic says there are some things you can do to prevent your phone from getting slammed.
You can put a freeze on the line.
That makes it harder to switch the long-distance carrier.
You also should look through your phone bill each month to catch any changes.
And read the fine print whenever you sign your name on a sweepstakes form or a credit card application.

Meals and race tickets could soon be taxed in Henry County to bring in new revenue.

The county's proposed budget calls for a four percent meals tax, and a two percent admissions tax on tickets to Martinsville Speedway events.
The Speedway tax would have to get General Assembly approval.
County administrator Sid Clower says the two new taxes would bring in about one-point-three million dollars each year.
Clower says the money would help make up for the revenue lost when the Dupont nylon plant closed.
He says the money is needed for education.
Clower wants to give students in the fourth and eighth grades access to computers.

He's also set an adult education goal.
Five years from now, Clower wants to make sure 80 percent of the adults in Henry County hold a high school diploma.
