21-year old Michael Dove died at the scene.
His 21-year old friend Michael Perry died later at a Roanoke hospital.

Both men are from Blacksburg and were riding on the motorcycle when it crashed head-on into a truck.
The driver of the pick-up, 26-year old John Claude Love, was charged with driving under the influence and felony hit and run.
Police say more serious charges COULD be filed at a later date.

One Roanoke police officer is still fighting civil charges in connection with an attempted arrest in 19-93.
Police managed to subdue 20- year old Eric Scott Lee, with what they call a "choke hold", but he died... of asphixiation.
The medical examiner has sided with Lee's family- -and against the police- -in a civil suit being heard this week in federal court.

Many Virginia Power customers may get a 50-dollar credit and a future rate reduction.
Attorney General Mark Earley announced the historic settlement with the utility company today.
It still needs State Corporation Commission approval.
The utility's monopoly status means strict government oversight.

Federal railroad regulators have approved the ten billion dollar split of Conrail by C-S-X and Norfolk Southern.

The Surface Transportation Board approved the joint takeover of Conrail yesterday.
Under the deal Norfolk Southern and C-S-X will split up the Philadelphia-based railroad, bringing competition to an area that's been served by one train.
An oversight panel will watch the railroad's progress for the next five years to make sure the takeover runs smoothly. For Virginia, the end of Conrail means almost 300 more jobs.

Yesterday Christopher Lee Fisher pleaded NO contest to driving under the influence and involuntary manslaughter.
Fisher was driving a pick-up truck that collided with a car last May in Elliston.
A seven-year old girl riding in the back of the truck was thrown onto the road and killed.
Fisher also pleaded no contest to possession of marijuana.
He could face eleven years in prison when sentenced in August.

When they never returned from a Memorial Day trip, friends and neighbors began to worry.

Two hundred grade schoolers in Page County left school early yesterday when rumors spread that a student might go on a shooting spree.
Parents of the Stanley Elementary School students heard that a fifth-grader at the school had made such a threat.
But police in the Page County town say the boy showed up for class unarmed, and said he never made any threats.
The School superintendent says the boy received counseling and will stay home for a few days.

Brookville Middle School in Lynchburg will be releasing students early today due to a power outage.
School officials say a transformer blew at the school this morning.
Rescue crews are on the scene as a precaution but at this time the students are in no danger.

More than a dozen people involved in a Roanoke drug ring pleaded guilty to various charges yesterday.
Fourteen people entered pleas in Roanoke's federal court.
Authorities say the heroin supplied by the group is responsible for three fatal overdoses since 19-96.
They point to a connection between the group's arrests and a rash of pharmacy break-ins shortly after as evidence that the heroin supply was cut off.
