Roanoke County has one of the lowest police ratios not only in the Valley, but also across the country-- 1.2 officers per 1000 people. The national average is twice that.
But the chief says it's not financially feasible to increase the number of officers overnight.

On Monday, parents in Page County picked up almost 200 kids early from school after hearing that a fifth grader had threatened a shooting spree.
Three Fairfax students were removed from school this week: one for posting a personal "death list" of 17 names on an Internet site, one for writing a note naming seven students he wanted to die, and one for threatening to put a bomb in a teacher's cabinet.
