One person is reportedly dead--another seriously injured following an accident on Smith Mountain Lake this afternoon.

It happened at Bernard's Landing around 3:15.
According to the area's security guard two jet skiers collided while riding along the lake.
Rescue crews at the scene confirmed that one of the skiers died.
The other was taken to Bedford County Hospital.
That skier's condition is not known.

A Martinsville man was killed and another wounded in a Henry County shooting Saturday morning.
It happened while a group of people were gathered on Harden Road. 26 year old Kenneth Lee Bruce died after he was shot in the head. Police say he was also hit by a car leaving the scene. Another man was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Police do have a suspect in the case.

Two people died in a Patrick County traffic accident last night.
It happened about 9:45.
20 year old Eric Simon Payne lost control on a curve on route 815, ran off the road and hit several trees. Payne and a passenger, 18 year old J-D Phillips were killed, both are from Stuart.
Another passenger, 16-year-old Rebecca Phillips was flown to North Carolina Baptist hospital with serious injuries.

250 people were left homeless around Thanksgiving after a fire destroyed most of an apartment complex in Danville.
Most of the victims hired a lawyer after their landlord refused to return their deposits.
But, seven months later two victims have found themselves still fighting the same battle.

Plans for construction of a new, controversial jail in downtown Covington have been put on hold for now.

The current jail is 111 years old and was scheduled to be demolished this month.
A new prison housing inmates from Clifton Forge, Covington, and Alleghany County will be built in its place.
However, engineers discovered that part of the jail's foundation extends underneath the town's courthouse.

More prisoners from Delaware are moving into the Commonwealth.
150 inmates were transferred to the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt yesterday.
The move was done to ease overcrowding in Delware prisons.
That makes a total of 300 prisoners transported from Delware to Virginia so far.
Virginia has plenty of space to house prisoners thanks, in part, to prisons built during George Allen's administrations.
