A Blue Ridge Parkway Ranger in North Carolina is dead after a shooting.
It happened at the Big Witch overlook near Cherokee.
A spokesman says the ranger was responding to a report of a man threatening visitors at the overlook with a rifle.


The suspect shot the ranger, and opened fire on three park service vehicles before running away.
The man was eventually caught after a large manhunt.
There's no word on the Ranger or the suspect's identity.

A Tennessee woman was hospitalized following a single vehicle accident today on I-81.

State police say Claire Marie Hayes Johnson, of Chattanooga, swerved to avoid being hit by another car entering traffic off of exit 109.
Johnson crossed the southbound lane, struck an embankment and landed in a ditch.
Authorities say she was taken to Radford Community Hospital. Her condition is not known.
No one else was injured, but traffic was slowed to a crawl for about an hour.

Police say the driver of one of two motorcycles travelling together lost control and slammed into the other.

The other three were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Alcohol will be banned from some college campuses if a request by the United Methodists Churches is approved.
The proposal came at the group's annual conference in Virginia.
The measure was proposed by delegate Andrew Pearson of Winchester.
Schools in Virginia supported by The United Methodists include Ferrum, Randolph-Macon Women's College, Randolph-Macon, Virginia Wesleyan and Shenandoah University.
There's no word yet on what the schools plan to do about the request.

The event was very close to the site of David Hunter's Retreat after fighting in the Hanging Rock battle.

Flames and smoke filled the second floor of the building, forcing some 175 residents out into the night.
More than a hundred fire, police and rescue workers fought the blaze.
Four elderly women were killed and 14 other residents were hospitalized.
Residents stayed with family or at nearby hospitals until the damage could be repaired.

Jeremy Mayfield made his first ride to victory lane yesterday afternoon on the Winston Cup Circuit taking the checkered flag in the Pocono 500.

A shower came through the area about 45 laps into the race it it was red flagged for over an hour while the track was dried.
Jeff Gordon would take off like a bullet on the restart but a couple of laps later Mayfield takes the lead from Gordon.
The third caution of the day would come out when Ricky Rudd loses an engine. Rudd went to the garage area and out of the race.
Dale Earnhardt, who had one of the fastest cars in practice, would work his way through the field he was in 10th place on lap 97.
Mayfield's car was strong enough that he was the leader at the halfway point of the race.
South Boston's Ward Burton was having a good run but he ran out of gas on the track and had to pit.
Darrell Waltrip came from nowhere and he was leading the race with 27 laps left to go. Waltrip finished sixth.
But Mayfield would blow past Waltrip and take the checkered flag winning the Pocono 500 and fulfilling a life long dream.

Dressage is a method of training which develops the horse's three natural gaits.
Competitors say it requires the power of gymnastics and the grace of ballet.

In the beginner levels of Dressage the horse and riders perform figures such as circles and serpentines.
The team is judged on the smoothness of transitions from a walk to a cantor or a trot to a halt.

After the completing the first two phases the horses endurance is tested in the third phase, stadium jumping.


The Commonwealth Games' Equestrian competition is June 27th.
About 150 riders are participating in the event at the Green Hill Equestrian Center in Salem.

Willie "B" turned 40 years old on Saturday.
Willie is the oldest known gorilla in captivity that's still fathering offspring.
And, inspite of his old age, Willie most recently fathered four babies within the last few years.
The 500 pound gorilla got a sheet cake in honor of his big day and a an extra large birthday card.
