A boat crash resulted in the death of a man on Smith Mountain Lake yesterday.
Police tried talking to the boat operator before he crashed into a rocky hillside, because authorities had suspected the boat was stolen.
Authorities say the boat operator didn't respond and instead sped off; crashing into a row of rocks at the edge of a hill.
The boat operator died at the scene.
Police are not releasing the victim's name.

Police say gunmen opened fire inside a Vietnamese restaurant yesterday morning.
Another five people were wounded.
Authorities are investigating a videotape from a surveillance
camera located in an alley behind the restaurant.
They're checking out reports the tape shows a car break-in in which a woman's purse was stolen.
They say the woman went into the restaurant and threatened revenge a day or two ago.
The woman's boyfriend reportedly has gang ties in the Seattle area.

A shopping outing turned into tragedy on I-81 Saturday, killing 7 people -- 4 of them children.
25-year-old Keith Chittum of Buena Vista was killed, along with his fiance, 19-year-old Whitney Rogers, his sister, 13-year-old Bridget Chittum, and his niece, 11-year-old Sheena Miskovsky.
Two brothers who rode along for the Roanoke shopping trip were also killed.
They were 10-year-old Jonathan Conner and 13-year-old Joshua Conner.
59-year-old truck driver Jerry Gregory of Craigsville was also killed in the Botetourt County Crash.

And Congressman Bob Goodlatte had a hand in creating the new law.

During the last session of Congress, Goodlatte helped introduce a bill that would make telemarketing fraud a criminal act.
President Clinton recently signed it into law.
Goodlatte also continues to focus on other issues that victimize older citizens.
He plans to meet with seniors at Northside Middle School this week to discuss concerns ranging from social security to medicare.

It was the cat's meow at the Roanoke Civic Center this weekend, as several felines and their owners took part in the third annual Star City Cat Show.

One person was killed in a boating accident on Smith Mountain Lake yesterday.
Police say they approached the operator of a boat they suspected was stolen.
The operator sped off in the boat, and crashed into the rocky shoreline.
His identity is not being released.

The seven victims of a weekend car crash on I-81 have been identified.
Everyone involved died when a car carrying six people crossed the median and struck a tractor trailer near the Arcadia exit.
Police say the truck driver was 59-year old Jerry Gregory of Craigsville. The identities of the other victims have been confirmed by relatives.
