Harry Archer is one of the many Catawba residents who has a stake in seeing that the proposed land swap deal between property owner David Turner and the forest service doesn't go through. Archer's great-grandmother was a slave. Hers was one of several black families that the disputed land was given to after the Civil War.

More than a dozen people were forced from their homes tonight when a Lynchburg apartment building caught fire.

Flames and smoke poured from the front of 17-09 Grace Street when firefighters responded around 8:30.
A resident of the building smelled smoke and went outside to investigate when he spotted the fire and called 9-1-1.


The blaze gutted a first floor apartment.. the occupants were NOT home at the time.
Firefighters escorted several other people to safety.. no one was injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A Danville man's life was spared today, but he will spend the rest of his life behind bars after he admitted to killing and robbing a North Carolina woman.

He was sentenced to two consecutive life terms for capital murder and robbery plus three years for a firearms charge.

New numbers released today by the State Compensation Board show cities and counties estimate their costs at more than 5-point-8 million dollars.

The race began under the lights and the caution flag would drop early, within the first five laps. Perhpas the most heated part of the race came with about 25 laps to go. Points leader Ron Hornaday is gonna get slammed into the wall by Jack Sprague.
Hornday comes in and then gets in to it with Sprague's crew and a shoving match ensues.
To add salt to wounds, Sprague wins the race and tovertakes the points lead from Hornaday, taking the checkered flag.
