It took more than seven hours.
But authorities were able to nab an inmate who tried to escape from the Botetourt Correctional Unit.

Tonya, the inmate was a 31-year old convicted felon who was out in the woods on a work detail.
When an armed guard turned his back, the inmate made a run for it.
He took off into the woods, stole clothes from a campsite he came across, then, about an hour after dark, police found him walking on the side of a road.

State police spent much of the evening stopping motorists and asking them if they had seen Robert Bentley Newberry.
Newberry, an inmate at the Botetorut Correctional Unit, is serving 19 years on charges of breaking and entering and grand larceny.
This afternoon he was on a work detail with 10 other inmates.
They were clearing brush in a heavily wooded area when Newberry broke lose.
State police brought out helicopters, joining officers from the state department of corrections and the Botetourt County Sheriff, surrounding the woods where Newberry escaped.
The search ended about an hour and a half ago.

Newberry is from the Hampton Roads area.
He was not considered violent.
Tonight he is back in custody and will be arraigned on escape charges.
If he's convicted, this run for freedom could have bought Newberry another five years in the penitentiary.

Coach Jeff Highfill says more than 60 players showed up, the best numbers in years.
