State police are looking for a man who escaped from a work gang in Botetourt County this afternoon.
The inmate is a 31-year-old white male, Robert Bentley Newberry from Hampton Roads.
He's serving 19 years for burglary, breaking and entering and grand larceny.
A spokesman for the corrections department says Newberry was on a road detail in the Buchanan area, clearing brush.
He was at the head of a line of nine inmates; the armed guard was at the rear.
Newberry took advantage of the situation to dash off into the woods.
No shots were fired.
State police are using a bloodhound and a helicopter to look for him.
Newberry is NOT considered violent.
A corrections officer WAS hurt during the search. He was talking to a stopped motorist when he was hit by another car.
The officer was taken to the hospital; no word yet on his condition.

Every ten years the government takes a census- -a head count to figure out how many of us there are.
The answer determines how we're represented in Congress and prescribes the way Billions of dollars in grant money are parceled out.
Now the government plans to modify its methods for the next census in the year 2000.
