Even the most famous landmarks aren't immune to the signs of aging.
But a local artist is restoring some historic landmarks in Carroll County to their early splendor--with the stroke of a pen.
Teresa Hamilton introduces us to Ron Leonard and his works in the latest edition of our special series "Virginia Profiles".

Ron Leonard is one of the most detailed artists you'll ever meet.
It's a skill that's a necessity considering the method he uses to create his works of art.
He uses a variety of pens.
This particular drawing, of the Allen family home, is a favorite among Carroll County history buffs.
The Allens, you may recall, were involved in that famous Carroll County shootout.

Years later, Leonard would realize his dream-- by opening his own sign shop.
And-- while it now pays the bills-- it's his drawings of local landmarks that are drawing attention.
He got his start a few years ago-- when he drew the Carroll News off a photo that appeared in the paper.
Today-- he's drawn a total of nine local landmarks-- he dubbed the Carroll County collection.

Leonard typically draws one landmark a year-- usually during the winter months.
And-- while he didn't draw one this year-- he does plan to make local art buffs happy in 1999.

A deadly car bomb has killed 28 people in Northern Ireland.
It appears to be the worst single act of atrocity in Northern Ireland in 30 years of conflict over British rule.
Authorities say that the bombers called in an innaccurate warning which prompted local police to move toward the bomb rather than away from it.
An I-R-A splinter group is believed to be responsible for the blast.
