Chain saws will hum in Jefferson National Forest after a federal judge in Roanoke approved the clearing of several hundred acres there.

Despite protest from several environmental groups, Judge James Turk has ruled that the Forest Service did consider the environmental impact of the proposed logging.
It affects about 600 acres of the forest in Alleghany County.

He also points out it does not involve clear cutting large areas of trees.

Two-hundred- fifty seven died in the car bombings, including 12 Americans.

A packed house turned out for the vote.
Several people spoke out against the project, and no one spoke in favor of it.

Sex charges have been filed against a man who served as a probation and parole officer in Pittsylvania County.
Patrick Wayne Gould was arrested yesterday on ten counts object sexual penetration, ten counts of sexual battery, and one count of forcible sodomy.
Brenda Prevette says the sexual abuse started after Gould became her probation officer in 1996, and continued until last month.
