Freshman orientation began this weekend at Virginia Tech, and the class of two- thousand and- two was welcomed onto campus with a lecture on binge drinking.

Earley's remarks came just a few weeks after the state's task force on binge drinking issued it's recommendations on the issue.
The committee's proposed strategies include dividing up the responsibility of preventing binge and underage drinking to different parts of a given community.

According to the guidelines, local and campus police and the ABC Board will work more closely together and some area sports bars have put in place tougher guidelines.
They require two forms of identification, and some permit only people 21-years and older after 10 pm.
And, at least one fraternity says it already has a three way check system in place and plans to do more.

The man accused of killing a Roanoke man at an Interstate 81 rest stop goes on trial today.

Livingston Bud Pritchett is charged with the murder of 57-year-old Estel Singleton was shot in the head.
His body was found at the Ironto rest stop with his pockets turned inside out.
Pritchett was arrested after he allegedly tried to get cash with the victim's A-T-M card.
Investigators also say they found the gun used to kill Singleton in
Pritchett's Roanoke apartment.
Trial is expected to last all week.

A man from Spencer was killed this morning in an auto accident in Henry County.
State police say 44-year-old Larry Wayne Lowe was a passenger in a Camaro that was traveling along Route 58 when the car's driver lost control on a curve.
Police say the Camaro ran off the road, struck an embankment, and flipped over.
Lowe was reportedly thrown from the car.
The accident happened around 11 o'clock last night.
Lowe died this morning at Martinsville Memorial Hospital.

A Roanoke hotel clerk was knocked unconscious during an armed robbery late Saturday night.
Roanoke police responded to the Hampton Inn on Franklin Road Southwest shortly after midnight.
They say a man with a knife approached Carol King outside the building and demanded money.
King reportedly lost consciousness when the man grabbed her neck and smashed her head into the counter several times.
When she woke up, the hotel's night receipts were missing.
King was taken to Lewis Gale Hospital for treatment.
