The ninety degree weather and no air conditioning made it just too hot for class at Franklin County high school. Students were let out at one-thirty. Windows and doors were opened for ventilation in the morning. Benjamin Franklin middle school and the Center for Applied Technology and Career Exploration do have air conditioning but students there were also bused home early. All three schools use the same transportation.

A pedestrian was struck by a tractor-trailer in Blacksburg last night.

Blacksburg police say the truck's driver apparently did everything he could to avoid hitting the victim on Route 460.
If he wouldn't have swerved, police say the victim probably would have died.
The accident occurred shortly before 10-30.
Police have not released the identity of the victim at this time, nor do they know why the victim was in the roadway.

The Pittsylvania County sheriff's office has arrested the wife of a man who was murdered over the weekend.
39 year old Victoria Sands is being held without bond and faces charges of first degree murder.

The man who directed the Franklin County Development Center pleaded no contest to embezzlement charges yesterday.

35-year old Jeffrey Krantz is accused of charging pleasure trips to the company credit card.
He was in charge of the Development Center, where handicapped adults make and sell baskets.
But last year he stole 16-hundred-dollars in cash and credit card purchases, using the company card to pay for rental cars and a vacation in Virginia Beach.
Special Prosecutor Everett Shockley agreed to drop the felony charges to avoid a trial.

The lawyer for 12 year old Bedford County boy says his client was only showing off when he brought a gun to school and DID NOT mean to hurt anyone.
The boy pleaded guilty yesterday to a charge of possessing a firearm on school property.
In June another student at Forest Middle School told his mother he had seen a classmate with a gun.

No word yet on the identity or condition of a pedestrian who was struck by a tractor-trailer in Blacksburg last night.
Blacksburg police say the truck's driver apparently did everything he could to avoid hitting the victim on Route 460.
If he wouldn't have swerved, police say the victim probably would have died.

About sixty people turned out to debate the merits of a Watershed Improvement District-- or "WID"-- for the Timber Lake area of Campbell County last night.
Residents had to put up their own money to the tune of one million dollars to replace a dam that collapsed there in 1995.
If they vote for a Watershed Improvement district, tax dollars collected from other parts of the county will help them bear the financial burden.
