The Health Department has lifted its warning against swimming in some parts of Smith Mountain Lake.

Three areas of the lake -- Crazy Horse Campground, Becky's Creek, and Hardy's Ford Bridge -- had high levels of bacteria from sewage last week.
But this week, Health Department tests show the water is fine.
Officials say this could change.
They will test the water once a week and try to find the source of last week's bacteria.
Heat in Southwest Virginia is causing more school closings for tomorrow..

Schools in Smyth County will be closing at two p-m.
And, Alleghany Highlands schools will close two hours early.

((Police say Steve Garnet had heavy fire power inside his trailer at the Riverland Mobile Home Court on West Riverside Drive.
For two hours he held police at bay.
They say he threatened to shoot any officer that approached the trailer.
He had apparently lost his jobs at Haley's Toyota in Roanoke today.
Police negotiated with Garnet by phone and coached him outside.
Police say he could be charged with threatening a police officer, but they are waiting for the results of a psychiatric evaluation.))

State Police say they've recovered the vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Pittsylvania County.
The 1973 black Ford pickup truck was found today at a residence in Ringgold.
34-year old Cynthia Faye White was struck and killed Tuesday night along State Route 360 in Keeling.
Her body was found yesterday morning.
The owner of the pickup truck says he was not driving it at the time of the accident.
The investigation is continuing.
Members of the Abed family were sentenced today.
To start with... Amar Abed spat at the prosecutor as he was led away in handcuffs.
Then the defendant's mother placed a curse on the judge.

Two of the jurors who heard the case last January and February showed up at today's hearing to find out what the defedants got.
Lawyers for capital murder suspect, Emmett Cressell, Junior are appealing a judge's decision to deny bond for their client.
Cressell's the second of two suspects to be tried for allegedly burning and beheading a black man in Grayson County, last summer.
Cressell's attorneys filed the appeal yesterday.
Cressell had been free on 150- thousand dollars bond after he was charged with first degree murder.
But when the charge against him was upgraded to capital murder several months ago, Cressell's bond was immediately revoked.
He's scheduled for trial in October.
A Rocky Mount apartment complex that housed eight families will NOT be repaired.
Instead, the owner has three months to destroy it.
The building is supported only by a pair of beams and a couple of cables.
Two years ago, heavy rains and mudslides split the foundation and drove residents out.
Today, a judge gave the building's owner, Bill Bratton of A-and-B Properties, 90 days to tear it down.

But he can NOT build another apartment complex -- the zoning has changed to allow churches, garages or single-family homes.
A Roanoke public housing complex is getting a huge gift from the federal government.
The announcement came at a press conference this afternoon, with the U-S Secretary of Housing and Urban Development calling in on a speakerphone.

Those are two of the reasons Donnkenny Apparel says its closing two of its Southwest Virginia plants.
Donnkenny is closing its New River Finishing plant in Christiansburg-- a move that will put nearly 65 people out of work.
The company is also closing its plant in Lee County which employs nearly 170 people.
The plants will officially close October 30th.
Company officials say the decision to shut down the plants will strengthen Donnkenny's operations in Floyd, Independence, and Wytheville.

This time it's MainStreet Financial Corporation-- announcing today it has been bought by Branch Bank and Trust.
B-B-and-T is based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
It already has branches in Virginia, including three in Roanoke.

Roanoke Express head coach Scott Gordon will meet with former Express left winger Chris Cantu tomorrow afternoon at 2 at the Roanoke office.
Today Gordon said he hopes to sign Cantu to a contract, though he should get a try out in either the IHL or AHL.
In 52 games last year, Cantu scored 30 goals and registered 20 assists last season. He has a personal trainer and has gone from 185 to 200 pounds over the summer.
E.C. Glass and Heritage kick off the Friday Football Extra season tonight as they renew their always entertaining rivalry at City Stadium.
Heritage is coming off a trip to the state championship game, while the hilltoppers are trying to not only rebound from a 2-and-8 season,
but also bounce back from the loss of Bo Henson.
After 19 years as head coach of the Toppers, Henson was relieved of his duties last November, and tonight interim head coach Dennis Peters takes over.
