Freeman Cockram is accused of obtaining money by false pretenses from a North Carolina man.

57-year old John Major Haygood tried to abduct Melanie Curnute (ker-NOOT) at knifepoint the night of April 28th.
Curnute managed to escape and a bystander chased Haygood down and held him until police arrived.

Curnute is considering legal action against the hospital for failing to prevent the attack.

Christiansburg Town Council last night approved a request to re-zone more than 40 acres near the Wal-Mart Super Center.

The 42-acre plot of land is now zoned for business, which paves the way for future growth.
The land, which is owned by Spradlin Farms, Incorporated, had been zoned for agriculture, industrial, and business use.

No one spoke against it.
A real estate company out of Bristol, Tennessee, is interested in purchasing the land.
A spokesman for "Interstate Development" says if a deal can be worked out, they intend to build a shopping center there.
