((With one swing of the bat, Mark McGwire has toppled baseball's most hallowed record. It looked like a foul ball, powered just over the left field wall and into history. Before a sellout crowd at St. Louis' Busch Stadium, and countless millions watching on television around the world, the man known as "BIG MAC" did what hasn't been done since 1961. He hit the most home runs in one season. 62 in all so far.
It was bedlam in the beer city of St. Louis. McGwire's teammates, his son, even friendly rival Sammy Sosa rushed to home plate to congratulate the new home run king.

Mark McGwire, St. Louis Cardinals
During the celebration that followed, McGwire rushed to the family of the late Roger Maris. It was the New York Yankee's record of 61 home runs in a season that has stood for a generation. Maris hit that mark on the LAST day of the season. In 1998, with more than a dozen games left until the playoffs, Mark McGwire has plenty of time to write his OWN history.))
